Security....
This document outlines some security issues you should be aware of when dealing with online banking and buying online. It also has some basic security considerations that you should be taking.

When giving personal deatils online such as banking and purchasing,  you should see 'https'

'http' is not secure.  The 's' is the designation for a secure enviroment,  so make sure it is showing before entering security details when banking online or purchasing online.

Never give personal details to someone who has contacted you electronically claiming to be from your bank as financial institutions will never contact via email asking you to update your details.  Also Microsoft will never send you an email with an update attached so never open an attachment that claims to come from Microsoft.  If you want to check whether something is a hoax such as a virus warning you can click on the following link. Hoax Check.

Below is a list of things you should not do;

  • Open email from a source you do not trust
  • Open unknown spam email,  also do not unsubscribe as this confirms your email address which makes the problem worse
  • Open attachments unless you are sure they are okay,  if necessary ring or email to confirm the identity of the sender

Below is a list of software you should be running on you computer;

  • Virus Software - This is essential software, and there are numerous free programs available from the internet however we do not recommend using free antivirus software if you are using broadband as they do not update these programs as frequently as the paid versions
  • Personal Firewall - This is essential for online banking
  • Anti Spyware - There are numerous free versions available
  • Free Software - We think AVG is the best of the free ones however we hold no responsibilty for this software.  the software can be found here.  AVG
